$40,000 Raised for Super-storm Sandy Victims on Staten Island: More Than a Year Later, There is Still Work to Be Done

On Thursday, November 14th The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund (CVBMF) along with The Lois & Richard Nicotra Foundation hosted “Rise Above” a fundraiser event at Above Rooftop where more than 300 people gathered and over $40,000 was raised for Staten Islander’s still affected by Super-storm Sandy.

The evening commenced with a brief ceremony led by Staten Island Assemblyman Joseph Borelli.

“Many of us in the room were not familiar with The Bini Fund before Hurricane Sandy,” said Assemblyman Borelli. “Since the storm hit, however, the foundation has gained notoriety because of its efforts, with the most noteworthy being through its partnership with Catholic Charities of New York they have given out more than $1.4 million in goods, services and grants to the Staten Island Community.”

Assemblyman Borelli then went on to thank The Lois & Richard Nicotra Foundation, as well as all of the evening’s sponsors.

“Even though the storm hit over a year ago, people are still walking into Carl’s House everyday in need of assistance,” said Massimo DiDonna, President of The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund. “We made a vow that we would continue to help as long as we could, and through the generosity of The Lois & Richard Nicotra Foundation and everyone present tonight, we are able to keep that vow.”

Carl’s House is an office, which was opened by CVBMF after the storm, where hurricane victims can go and be assigned a caseworker through Catholic Charities of New York to help them gain access to the assistance they need.

Mr. DiDonna then called Lois and Richard Nictora as well as Hilton Garden Inn General Manager, Frank Sanchez, to the stage and presented them with a “Lifetime Supporter Award” and announced that 100% of the money raised would benefit Staten Island because The Nicotra Foundation donated the space, food, and staff for the event.

While the devastation of Superstorm Sandy may have happened a year ago, Staten Island-based non-profit, The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund (CVBMF), is still hard at work. Through its partnership with the Catholic Charities NY State Disaster Case Management Program, the organization has been able to facilitate over $1.2 million in aid to Staten Islander’s since the storm hit. However, Carl’s House, the organization’s relief headquarters, is still receiving new cases nearly every day.

“It may seem like the island has fully recovered because we’ve come a long way and a sense of normalcy has been restored,” said Massimo DiDonna, President of The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund. “However, people still walk into Carl’s House with Sandy-related issues, and we will continue helping them until their needs are met.”

After focusing on immediate recovery and relief efforts, the non-profit was inundated with requests related to paperwork and filing procedures ranging from insurance claims to grant assistance. That led to the opening of Carl’s House, and a partnership with Catholic Charities of New York to handle these requests on a case by case basis.

“Our mission is to be there for our community in times of crisis, and we thank Catholic Charities of New York for being with us every step of the way,” said CVBMF Board Member, Frank Provenzano.

Manchester City Football Club Donates Soccer Equipment to Hurricane Sandy Victims in Staten Island

As part of Manchester City Football Club’s 2013 U.S. Tour, the team has partnered with The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund to donate much needed soccer equipment to help those impacted by Hurricane Sandy get back to the pitch.

Earlier today, players from Premier League Club Manchester City including Samir Nasri, Edin Dzeko, Gaël Clichy, Javi Garcia, Aleksandar Kolarov and Abdul Razak along with representatives from The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund and local elected officials visited St. Joseph By-The-Sea High School in Staten Island, where they hosted a soccer skills training session, commemorated the equipment donation and toured the hurricane disaster area.

The donated items including soccer goals, nets, balls, pinnies and other equipment will directly impact youth soccer players that are part of the SI United Soccer Club.

“Giving back to the community is at the core of Manchester City Football Club’s philosophy,” said Mike Summerbee, Manchester City Football Club ambassador. “We are enthusiastic believers in the development of soccer in the U.S. and have seen first-hand the passion that North American supporters have for the beautiful game. We are thrilled to be able to provide equipment to the Staten Island community that will enable youth soccer players to further develop their skills and teamwork.”

The soccer equipment donation and school visit are an extension of Manchester City’s City Soccer in the Community (CSITC) program that provides support, coaching and quality programming for kids in the U.S.A. to play soccer. The event is also the first of a series of city-wide events taking place this week to celebrate the club’s U.S. Tour and match against Chelsea FC on Saturday, May 25 at Yankee Stadium.

Zakk Wylde, Morgan Rose, Kevin Martin, John ||JD|| DeServio, and The Infinite Staircase Collaborate on Song to Raise Money for Hurricane Sandy Victims

Renowned rock musicians Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, formerly with Ozzy Osbourne), Morgan Rose (Sevendust, Call Me No One), Kevin Martin (Candlebox, The Gracious Few), John “JD” DeServio (Black Label Society, Cycle Of Pain), and The Infinite Staircase have collaborated to create a song to raise money for people affected by Hurricane Sandy. The song, entitled “The Pride,” will be available as an iTunes exclusive on February 5th with 100% of the proceeds to benefit The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund rebuilding efforts.

“These are our streets, this was our home,” said co-writer, singer and guitarist, Lenny Cerzosie of The Infinite Staircase. “We’re going to take care of our own and that’s what the song really comes down to, it’s all about the pride.”

“Living on the Jersey shore my entire life, I was mortified at the after effects of Hurricane Sandy,” says JD DeServio of Black Label Society. “It was heart breaking to see all the lives that were affected throughout the tri-state area, and hopefully the song will benefit some of those unfortunate people.”

The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund has been actively providing assistance to those in need since the storm hit. Initiatives have included the distribution of $25,000 through its gift card program, purchasing building supplies to help restore homes for over 100 families, the organization of volunteer clean-up efforts, and the opening of Carl’s House, a relief center where victims will be able to receive free assistance through case management.

“This song will help people heal and rebuild in so many ways,” said Massimo DiDonna, co-founder of The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund. “It will not only help raise funds for the region, it will remind people everywhere of the inner strength and pride of the people affected by Sandy. We are grateful to have been approached but such prominent artists in the rock industry and we thank them for what they’ve created.”

Shadow Valley Elementary School Shines Bright During Holidays: 10 Year Old in Odgen, Utah Conducts School-wide Fundraiser for Victims of Hurricane Sandy

In the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, 10 year-old Rowen Henneman took it upon himself to make a difference, and help those affected during the holiday season. The fourth grader at Shadow Valley Elementary School in Ogden, Utah coordinated a school-wide fundraiser which brought in $1,000 and presented the check to The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fundin Staten Island, New York.

The Shadow Valley School has roughly 300 students ranging from Kindergarten to 6th grade, and after learning about The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Henneman approached his step-father and the school’s principal about the initiative.

“When Rowen first told me about his desire to help, I supported him 100%,” said Kent Winward, Rowen’s step-father. “After speaking to the Principal and then talking it over with the students, they had a sense of hope and pride in being able to help others.”

The fundraiser took place over the course of three weeks and in addition to reaching out to both students and parents in the school, Rowen also reached out to local businesses to support the effort. Three Ogden merchants decided to participate by offering prizes for the three classes that raised the most money with Rowen’s fourth grade class placing first followed by the two first grade classes.

The fundraiser ended on Friday, December 21st at the school’s holiday assembly where the entire student body and faculty gathered and took a photo around the check in the amount of $1,000 which was sent to The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund on Staten Island. The organization’s Co-founder, Massimo DiDonna, spoke with the children via telephone through the public address system and commended them on their efforts.

“To say that I was truly touched by the gesture is an understatement,” said DiDonna. “These children realized that families were going to have a tough time during the holidays, and literally took it upon themselves to help people thousands of miles away. The story of Rowen, the other students, faculty, and parents of Shadow Valley is one that everyone should hear, because they are the brightest example of how during times of tragedy there is always a ray of hope that shines through.”

Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund Commissions Hurricane Sandy Song, Features Members of Sevendust, Candlebox, Black Label Society and the Infinite Staircase

The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund (CVB Memorial Fund), a Staten Island-based non-profit organization, has commissioned a song specifically written and produced to raise funds for the rebuilding process in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The track entitled, The Pride, features renowned artists Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ex-Ozzy Osbourne), Morgan Rose (Sevendust, Call Me No One), Kevin Martin (Candlebox, The Gracious Few), John “JD” Deservio (Black Label Society, Cycle Of Pain) and The Infinite Staircase.

“When we were approached about the project we were honored to get on board,” said Massimo DiDonna, Co-Founder of The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund. “This song will not only strengthen the resolve of those affected, but also serve as a beacon of hope during the aftermath of the storm that families have not been forgotten and that we will not rest until the rebuilding process is complete.”

The song was recorded on December 12th in Butler, New Jersey at Architeckt Music, and both the studio and the recording engineer, Mike Ferretti, graciously donated their services to the project.

“The entire Bini organization would like to extend its thanks to everyone involved,” said Anthony Rapacciuolo, CVB Memorial Fund Board Member. “The artists especially need to be recognized, because they’ve created a timeless memorial to a moment in history that affected so many.”

The musicians featured on the song all have close ties to the heavily affected areas of New York and New Jersey. Some were raised there and all have friends or family residing in those states. In the case of JD DeServio and Lenny and Jeff Cerzosie of The Infinite Staircase, they currently live in the areas of devastation.

The song will be released, as an iTunes exclusive, via Vanity Music Group sometime in late January with the exact date forthcoming. 100% of the proceeds raised from the song will benefit The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund.

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday and Now SANDY SUNDAY

The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund (CVB Memorial Fund), a Staten Island based non-profit, has launched a national fundraising campaign to fuel the rebuilding process in areas of devastation on the heels of the largest weekend in retail sales. Sandy Sunday© is a national appeal to businesses and individuals beginning November 25th and continues until December 23rd. Participation ranges from contributing a portion of the days revenue to making a one-time donation, on one or all of the following five Sundays. The non-profit is actively seeking retailers, restaurants, fast food chains, and small businesses to engage in the campaign, and is already in conversations with several interested parties.

Consumers and businesses recognize Black Friday, American Express Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. Sandy Sunday began as a concept to help rebuild affected areas of Staten Island, but with the right partners, CVB Memorial Fund feel it has the very real capacity to raise enough funding over the course of five Sunday’s to provide aid to the entire east coast.

“Once we set this initiative in motion we received an incredible response from local businesses,” said Massimo DiDonna, Co-Founder of CVB Memorial Fund. “We are now putting out a call to everyone across the country to support the victims of Hurricane Sandy, because together we will make difference.”

According to CNN.com, total consumer spending in 2011 for the weekend after Thanksgiving was a record-breaking $52.4 billion dollars; a 16% increase from 2010. In addition, a record 226 million consumers shopped in stores and online between Thursday and Sunday, up from 212 million the prior year. The average holiday spending increased as well from $365.34 in 2010 to $398.62 last year.

“People need to remain cognizant of the fact that there are thousands of families who have nowhere to spend their holidays this year,” said Kevin Jamison, CVB Memorial Fund Board Member. “If everyone were to contribute a fraction of the money they saved this weekend because of the sales that are going on, the impact it would have is nothing short of monumental.”

Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund Staten Island Disaster Recovery

The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund (CVB Memorial Fund) has been coordinating disaster relief efforts across Staten Island since the hurricane hit last week. Its first initiative focused on the collection and redistribution of clothing and supplies island-wide, including its offices located at 18 Hervey Street and Rab’s Country Lanes on Hylan Boulevard. In addition to its facilitating various distribution networks, the organization has been identified as the point person for donations coming in from various sources with the most recent being a shipment of clothing from singer, John Mayer.

“With our homes and office in areas of Brooklyn affected by the storm, we know what New Yorkers has endured over the past week,” said John Mayer’s Management Team. “We got word of the Bini Foundation’s efforts on Staten Island and reached out – they made it incredibly easy to help, and we hope these resources provide some relief to those most affected by Sandy.”

That is just one example of the overwhelming support the CVB Memorial Fund has received. The foundation facilitated the delivery of over 18,000 meals donated from the cancelled marathon to those in need, firefighters from Connecticut drove to its offices bearing supplies, over 300 volunteers have manned its donation facilities, and other charitable organizations and evacuation centers have relied on them to distribute supplies directly to those in need.

”Often called the ‘forgotten borough’ our community has banded together in such strength and numbers demonstrating that we will not be forgotten,” said Massimo DiDonna, Co-Founder of the Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund. “Our organization was founded to carry on the heroism of my father-in-law, a firefighter who passed away on 9/11, and be a local hero to those in need in our community, now more than ever Staten Island needs a hero.”

After the cancellation of the New York City Marathon, Ryan and Pamela Murphy orchestrated a fundraiser among Staten Islanders who in lieu of running were able to raise over $15,000 which was in turn donated to the CVB Memorial Fund.

“At the onset of the disaster, we relied heavily on our Facebook Page as well as our people on the ground at various locations to let us know exactly where we were needed,” said Frank Provenzano, CVB Memorial Fund Board Member. “The fact that we are a Staten Island based non-profit focused exclusively on rebuilding and aiding our own community has allowed us to act as a conduit through which people, such as those who ran to raise money for the island, can rest assured that their efforts will directly benefit our borough.”

The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund is also rolling out a series of events, both locally and nationally, over the next two years to continue to fuel the rebuilding of Staten Island. Already, the organization has executed an event in San Diego, partnered with a company in Idaho, and is working on an event in Las Vegas. Its first local fundraiser will be on Sunday, November 11th at The Old Bermuda Inn to continue raising money for its cause.

“We are by no means out of the woods,” said Board Member Kevin Jamison. “It’s a natural tendency for people to forget how bad a situation is after the sense of urgency has passed, however, we as an organization know what it’s going to take to put our borough back together and have already committed to a two year fundraising initiative which will go directly toward the rebuild.”

As of late, the CVB Memorial Fund has purchased over $2,000 worth of tools and supplies and armed more than 400 volunteers who have assisted in cleaning specific areas of the island. The non-profit has ramped up its fundraising efforts to ensure that it has the financial ability to continue to provide for the needs of its community.

“Staten Island has come together as we always do to help one another,” said Councilman Vinny Ignizio, District 51. “While our government agencies are working hard on relief efforts, it is organizations like the Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund which are stepping up to the plate to fill in the gaps.”
